Hello to all my fans! Have a very happy New Year. I was so busy over Christmas that I have neglected to tell you about my birthday. It was on Christmas Eve and I am now 4 years old. You will be pleased to know that I have not slowed down very much and I am still enjoying life as much as ever. I got some chews for my birthday which have nearly gone. For Christmas, I got lots of treats and some more floating balls on a rope as Daddy keeps on losing them.

I can't understand the weather we are having. This time last year, there was a lot of snow and I haven't seen any yet. I am very disappointed and I am sometimes too hot. I hope it snows soon.

GPS

The other day, Daddy bought a keyring GPS to measure how far I 'walk' compared with him. He bought it on eBay.

I wore it for the first time on our recent walk up Dow Crag and Coniston Old Man and the results show that I walked 3 times as much as Daddy on Walna Scar (open ground). Funnily enough, Evan Davis was on yesterday's Saturday PM programme on radio 4 saying the same thing. Overall I did 2 times as much from the start to Goat's Water. Daddy had to take it off then because of my love of swimming! It doesn't look as though you can download my route, which is a shame, but here is Daddy's. Notice the Brocken spectre at the top of the Old Man. Daddy got really excited when he saw this.

Reunions in the Lakes

As promised, here are the walks we did on our latest trip to the Lakes. We were limited to 3 big ones. I blame Daddy who is getting lazy now he is 60. He says he had other things to do and that the weather was bad. There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.Here are the walks:

I collected two rosettes yesterday at Almondsbury Gymkhana. There was a companion dog show there which Daddy entered me in for a bit of fun. The two rosettes were for 5th place in the Hound, Gundog & Working Pedigree Class and 3rd place for the Novelty Titbit Catching Class. I was surprised about that because I dropped the first one!

It would have been more fun if it was not so hot and if I could have played with all the other dogs. Golly, was it hot!

We finished the Wye Valley Walk in the last two days and had a great time. We found the sources of the river Wye and the river Severn and I was the only one that paddled in them, so I think I deserve a certificate!

Agility training

I went to Celestine Dog Training yesterday afternoon to try out agility classes and had a brilliant afternoon. I got to do jumps (I think I can jump a lot higher, though!), tunnels, weaves, and a high walkway. I can't wait to go again. Who knows, I might even get to enter competitions if I am good enough!

Training Daddy

I am still trying to train Daddy. He is hopeless at fetching balls. I put them in obvious places for him to pick up and throw, but he doesn't seem to have the skill that I've got. It's not as though I am expecting him to chase after them. He thinks I am the retriever, but I have other plans.

I agree with a fellow dog who said on the radio the other day that, if it was left to us, he would have put all his money into biscuits and not derivatives and then the credit crunch wouldn't have happened.

Tick treatment

Here's a useful tip. I picked up a tick on my eyelid the other day. In the absence of vaseline, I tried Savlon antiseptic cream on it. Daddy had to be very careful. It worked very quickly. I don't like the smell of tea tree oil and I hate anyone approaching me with tweezers, so this is a good solution.

I hosted a great birthday dinner party last night with some friends. I was told I was the epitome of "joie de vivre", so I had to look it up. It is used to express a cheerful enjoyment of life; an exultation of spirit. Yep, that's me!

I've just had the 'snip' and I'm wearing this lampshade to stop me licking the wound. My doctor wasn't happy that I hadn't been wearing this. I'm also restricted to walking on a lead as well, so I can't wait to get better. I'm looking forward to going to the Lakes next week - that will be a nice reward.

Daddy had to think about this a lot, but he thinks it is for the best as I've given him some embarrassing moments recently. (See earler blogs labelled 'castration'.)

We heard an excrutiating howl on our walk yesterday morning and we had to investigate. We saw what looked like a dog limping towards us and we thought that it had been bitten by something. It turned out to be a fox, probably after a fight with another one. There were three in the field altogether, so maybe two males were fighting over a female. Anyway, I ran over and gave chase. They all three saw me and ran the other way and jumped over a wall to continue their fight. They were faster than me but it was a good sprint. Daddy says he is pleased they didn't gang up on me because I would have come off worse!

I'm as good as GOLD!

Last night, I obtained my Kennel Club Good Citizen gold award! It was not easy, but my 6 friends and I all managed it. I nearly messed up with the 2 minute down-stay, as I was distracted. I was OK on my second attempt, which turned out to be the longest 3 minutes of my life! Daddy tried to mess it up as well with the questions, but he scraped through. In my opinion, he was trying to be too clever.

It was a happy occasion because we all passed, but it was also sad because that was the last night of training for me. I have made a lot of friends there and the trainers (Jeanette, Celine, et al at Castle Court Dog Training Club) said they will miss me as well. I was always so excited every Wednesday night. Anyway, let's hope an agility class can be set up locally later this year so I can stretch myself even further.

I'm 3 today

Having a mixed day on my birthday today. I'm now 3! It started well when I had another walk/play/roll/run/game in the snow (see above). Then I went for coffee to my favourite friends' house. I was very excited to see them, but unfortunately I threw up on their nice lounge carpet. I had been eating the cattle's hay instead of breakfast. I really hope I am allowed back again!

In the afternoon, I met another flattie called Isla. I enjoyed our little game and we even posed for a quick photo! Guess which is which.

Had a great party on Wednesday night at school. I won a couple of prizes but I don't know what they are yet, as they are going into my stocking. We played games all evening and my favourite was the agility relay race. I just love racing over the gates and into the tunnel - great fun.

I made a new friend yesterday, Dylan. He's just a puppy, but bigger than me. Anyway, we got on very well after a bit of mutual surveillance. He's also a flat-coat and has very similar traits to me - handsome, friendly, fit, enthusiastic, etc. Here we are having a romp in the snow near Monmouth.

Had a great walk (11 miles) last Friday in the Black Mountains. It was very windy and it made me very 'hyper'. I was haring around like there was no tomorrow. One of our party told Daddy that is what happens to children when it blows a gale. We had not heard that before.

Another great time in the Lakes

I made some new friends from Germany and they took me swimming in Coniston Water and played with me a lot. I entered the Lowick Show with them and came 2nd in the 'best condition' section of the dog show. My friends thought I ought to have done well with the 'waggiest tail' and 'the dog the judge would most like to take home' as well, but not to be.

I impressed my trainers on my first week back for some time. I started off slowly (recall was not as exciting as seeing my friends again!). However, I managed 'away to bed' with no problem and stunned Daddy. Apparently I have 'improved' whatever that means.

Making Hay while the sun shines

We spent a day around Hay-on-Wye on May 21. In the morning, we did our 7th leg of the Wye Valley walk, had a pint in a nice pub garden and looked around bookshops (yawn!), and in the afternoon we climbed Hay Bluff. Actually we climbed Hay Bluff twice, because Daddy left my lead at the top and didn't remember it until we nearly reached the bottom. I kept him company just to check out what he was up to.

I passed!!!!! Second time lucky. There was a great cheer that went around the hall on Wednesday night when I controlled my greeting. I did not jump up or bite her arm this time. It must have been the 17 mountains I climbed the previous fortnight which slowed me down just a tad. (More about my visit to the Lakes later....)

I'm poorly!

I've got a poorly paw. I had to go to the vets in Newbury while I was at Grannie's as one of my paws swelled up and I couldn't put any weight on it. I did feel out of sorts. Anyway, it is getting better very quickly as Daddy is hiding the medication in my food and I am taking it!

It's my birthday today!

I am now 2 years old. I feel very grown up. I am so grown up that I am jumping into the car voluntarily, and when playing fetch I am giving Daddy my ball into his hand to throw. Daddy is very pleased - he's getting old and it saves him lifting me into the car and bending down to pick up a ball!

I had a duck for my birthday this morning. I don't know whether to call it Donald, Jemima or Ducky. I think maybe Jemima, because it is white (getting off-white very quickly!).

Controlled greeting?

It's a long time since I put paw to keyboard, but I'm back from various trips away, including 3 weeks in the Lake District. More of that later. But before I went there, I took my Silver Award and failed! Guess what I failed on? The controlled greeting. The examiner was very friendly so I was as well. Apparently too friendly! I couldn't resist jumping up and showing my affection by mouthing his forearm. Daddy thought I had failed straight away and he was right. I did everything else perfectly, so what's the problem?

A deer and a horse

Just had a great local walk, one of my favourites in fact. Not only that, I impressed Daddy as we went into a field with a horse and a deer. The deer looked as though he thought he belonged to the horse. I was off the lead and only half-heartedly gave chase. The deer was not too bothered and stayed with the horse and I came back. The fact that I was hot and tired had nothing to do with it! That is the first time we have seen a deer in Alveston.

Dogs Trust

I had a relatively dull day yesterday as Daddy spent a lot more time on the computer. However, things perked up when we had a visit from two people from the Dogs Trust. I like them because they played with me. One of them hadn't heard of a flat-coated retriever before, so I educated him. Daddy signed up and we are now sponsoring Roxy Rocket and Skippy. A worthy cause, I reckon. Well done, Daddy!

Last night I went to training after missing another week or so. I think I am improving. However, the toughest part was the game we played - a down-stay relay! I found this very hard, but our team won the best out of three, so I couldn't have been that bad.

A wet time in the Lake District

Well, it rained and it rained and it rained. But who cares? I love swimming and I couldn't get enough of it. Coniston Water was overflowing, which is unusual for this time of year, but it isn't as high as last October when the boathouse was flooded.

I went on some great local walks and, on the only fine day, a high level one up Coniston Old Man. Here are our recorded walks (ie excluding the short ones down to the lake).

We returned to the river Wye yesterday. I was very disappointed as I could not get down to the river much and it was very warm. Anyway, I had a great walk and I am sleeping it off today.

Silver class

I attended my first silver/gold class last night. It was very hot and I was very excited to see my old friends again, especially Sky, a Gordon Setter. Anyway, I got to learn a new command 'send away'. I don't like that very much!

I am now 18 months old and 25 kilos. Here is a picture of me and another flat-coat on my last visit to Newbury. For a flat-coat that's supposed not to like other flat-coats, I thought he was very friendly!

Muntjac

Daddy didn't tell me there was a muntjac on this walk in Newbury (Lambourn Valley Way through Donnington Grove golf course) and I missed it, darn it! I suppose that makes up for times when I see or smell something and Daddy doesn't (which is most of the time). It is a bit blurred as he took it on his mobile phone and blew it up. According to Wikipedia, muntjacs are 13-35 million years old. Wow!

Well, we got back from the Lakes yesterday and today we went to school for my Kennel Club bronze award. And guess what? I passed! 7 out of 9 of us passed and we are promoted to the silver class when we meet again in three weeks time - phew!

Now that is what I call a walk!

On Monday, we returned to the Langdale Valley and walked up Rossett Pike, Esk Pike, Bow Fell and Crinkle Crags. The best thing was that we found loads of tarns to bag. Sometimes, Daddy found them before I did, but not often! The worst thing was the 'bad step' which I opted out of.

A great day in Exmoor

Well, I've now sampled the delights of Exmoor. What a great place - the sea at Porlock Weir (and pub lunch) followed by a walk by the river in Horner Wood (and cream tea). Could not be better, except of course the Lake District where I am returning tomorrow - yippee!

Training

I can now sit/stay and down/stay for a minute! I have managed it in both the last two weeks training sessions. It takes a big effort on my part, especially when my friends are undergoing the same torture. The big day - the bronze award - has been changed to June 10th and I can make that, unless I can think of an excuse in the meantime! So, wish me luck!

Hedgehog

I was really naughty the other night. I couldn't stop barking and would not come inside to go to bed when Daddy asked me too. You see, I found this prickly ball and it moved of its own accord. I hadn't seen one before and I didn't know what it was. Well, it transpired it was a hedgehog. Daddy says he was pleased I didn't pick it up!

We walked our second leg yesterday from Whitebrook to Yat Rock. This was great as we followed the river all the way and I got to swim ever so many times. There were lots of people throwing sticks into the river for me.

This was the best day of the lot. We wanted to climb Lingmell as promised for the Wainwright Society, but the weather was so good, we climbed Great End and Scafell Pike as well.
